Residential: Addition & Alterations
Conlon Engineering provided structural engineering services for a significant renovation and expansion of a private residence located in Rye, New York. The project scope included new additions at both the front and rear of the home, featuring covered porches, updated interior layouts, and improved connections between existing and new spaces. Structural design addressed the reinforcement of existing framing, introduction of new foundation elements, and coordination for large openings to accommodate new windows and doors. The alterations were carefully integrated with the original structure to ensure a seamless architectural transition. Conlon collaborated closely with the architect and contractor to maintain the home’s character while enhancing its function.
A key design consideration was preserving the visual charm and traditional detailing of the residence while upgrading its structural performance to meet current codes. The introduction of larger glazed areas, vaulted ceilings, and expanded living spaces required creative framing strategies using engineered wood members and steel where needed. The foundation work had to be sensitively executed around existing conditions, minimizing disturbance while providing long-term stability. Coordination with site constraints and grading also played a role in the structural planning. The end result is a thoughtfully modernized home that retains its original charm while offering improved usability and resilience.
