Pedestrian Bridge Renovation
Conlon Engineering provided structural engineering services for the renovation of an elevated pedestrian bridge connecting the building the adjacent Constitution Plaza in downtown Hartford. The existing structure underwent selective demolition and reconstruction to accommodate architectural upgrades and updated utility systems. Key improvements included new waterproofing assemblies, stainless steel guardrails, granite cladding, and a hydronic snow-melt system integrated into the walking surface. The design aimed to preserve the bridge’s structural integrity while enhancing safety, accessibility, and visual quality. Coordination with the building owner, contractors, and city officials was essential due to the bridge’s urban location and continued pedestrian use.
The renovation required evaluation of existing framing elements and detailed retrofit design to support new loads and finishes. Structural modifications were designed to align with the architectural vision without compromising performance or code compliance. The final result is a revitalized pedestrian connection that enhances the functionality and appearance of this critical downtown Hartford corridor. The project showcases Conlon’s ability to deliver technically sound solutions that support complex renovations in high-profile public settings.
